UPDATE: Burien’s Severe Weather Shelter will remain open through Saturday night, Feb. 13, 2021, at Highline United Methodist Church.
With temps predicted to be in the mid-20s and the possibility of snow, this shelter plays a vital part in helping our community’s homeless population.
“We had a successful first night at the Severe Weather Shelter,” organizers said. “Our guests were very appreciative of the warmth and hospitality, some even mentioning they would be bringing friends back with them tonight. As is usual, as the cold persists, the need for warm food and shelter intensifies, so we are preparing accordingly.”
Based on the weather forecast, organizers say that they may extend the shelter to Sunday.
VOLUNTEERS & DONATIONS STILL NEEDED
Volunteers and donations are still needed at the shelter.
Please check here for new opportunities
“Are you an early riser? We have morning shifts available and really need folks who can come help get our guests up, fed and ready for the day.”
They also need people who would like to come and clean during the day while the shelter is closed. Due to Covid it is important to have more frequent disinfecting of the space. This is a great position for anyone who requires minimal contact with other people.
“For anyone who is not sure what to expect, one of our Amazing Volunteers said today that it was more fun than work and that they had a lot of fun getting to know new, interesting people. Another expressed what a wonderful opportunity it was for them to both get out of the house, and serve the community. You will have plenty of guidance and direction as many of our Volunteers have been with us from the beginning and can show you the ropes. Things may be different this year in some ways, but the feeling of serving your community remains quite gratifying.”
If you are wanting to drop off donations, they have Volunteers on site before 9 a.m. and after 4 p.m. daily while the shelter is open (map of HUMC is below). If the main entrance is locked, please go down around to the south side of the church, toward the back of the building and knock on the door (it’s near the kitchen) and someone will come let you in.
“Thank you all for your support, kindness and generosity. It truly does take us all.”
