From our friends at WABI Burien:

Hey all!

Our next walk will be this Saturday, February 8th at 11AM. We’ll be talking about the nutritional value of whole foods, particularly fiber, which gets removed from food through most forms of processing. The loss of fiber in our diets has been identified as a major cause of chronic disease, but consuming whole foods (especially plants) has been shown to be protective against disease. We’ll also touch on how processed foods have been engineered to taste so good that we literally can’t stop eating them. Come with an appetite for learning!

Going forward this year we’ll be walking on the second Saturday of each month. (See the new flyer at right.)

Meeting Place: Burien Town Square Park
480 SW 152nd St., Burien, WA 98166
Meet at the large, south end sculpture. In case of inclement weather, we’ll meet in the lobby of the Burien library – 400 SW 152nd St STE 100, Burien, WA 98166

Leader: Dane Nimako, MD
After a 15-20 minute talk, we’ll all walk together westward to Lake Burien Park, and then back to Burien Town Square.

If this will be your first time on a “Walk with a Doc”, please REGISTER HERE. This will also put you on the email notification list about future walks.

About Walk with a Doc

According to the American Heart Association, walking has the lowest dropout rate of any physical activity. Walking is low impact and easier on the joints than running. It is safe – with a doctor’s okay – for people with orthopedic ailments and heart conditions.

Walk with a Doc is a walking program for everyone interested in taking steps for a healthier lifestyle. You’ll take a few minutes to learn about a current health topic from a healthcare professional, then spend the rest of the hour enjoying a healthy walk and fun conversation. It’s a great way to get out, get active, and learn about health from a trained professional, instead of the internet.

The South Seattle chapter is run by local family physician Dane Nimako, MD. You can find him practicing at a few different organizations around Seattle, but he runs the chapter independently as a way of bringing health education outside clinic walls.

The Walk with a Doc program was started in Columbus, OH in April of 2005 by Dr. David Sabgir and has now expanded throughout the world. You don’t need any special gear and there are no special rules. Walk your own pace and distance.

Walk with a Doc is a separate organization and not affiliated with Walk/Bike Burien (aka “WABI”), but WABI loves to promote walking and is happy to let folks in the south end know about other walking opportunities in the area.

Since 2007, The B-Town Blog is Burien’s multiple award-winning hyperlocal news/events website dedicated to independent journalism.
